Advantages of Self-Mailers
Businesses generally make promotional pieces, brochures and newsletters into self-mailers due to the considerable cost savings versus traditional marketing pieces. Costs can be saved by eliminating outer envelopes as well as postage. The following are additional cost savings realized with self-mailers:
- Elimination of folding, inserting and addressing, reducing labor costs.
- Elimination of set-up and post-processing time.
- Potential postage savings.
- Provision of added security for confidential information, such as payroll checks.
- Elimination of envelope inventories.

Types of Self Mailers
Self Mailers generally consists of a one part form that has a V-fold, C-fold or a Z-fold. It can contain inserts and/or a reply envelope that is constructed from the mailer itself. It can be also be constructed by adding a patch to the mailer to form the envelope. The self mailer can also have windows die cut out of them to allow an address to show through when folded. The different types of sealing processes that are available are remoistenable glue, pressure seal, pressure sensitive tape, line gluing and spot gluing. The level of security that is required for the mailing piece will be a factor in what type of sealing process we will use.
There are continuous form self-mailers, C-Fold two-way mailers, C-Fold one-way mailers with “blockouts” added for security, cut sheet self-mailers, V-Fold one and two-way mailers and quite a few other designs.
Limits of the Self Mailer
· Performance: They hardly ever out-pull the same information enclosed in an envelope.
· Appearance: Self-mailers also yell “promotional message inside.” They are, by their very function, promotional. No one sends a personal message to friends in a self-mailer.
· Tone: Self-mailers look less personal than envelopes do. And when you are writing to businesspeople, you want your correspondence to be peer-to-peer, not vendor-to-customer.
Generally speaking, you don't use a self-mailer when you are trying to secure orders unless you only desire replies by telephone. The typical reply device for a self-mailer is a removable postcard. A hindering factor is that people dislike placing their credit card numbers on external postcards not enclosed in envelopes.
Similarly, if people want to respond to your self-mailer by sending in a check, many self mailer types contain no envelope. Also, if your offer relies solely on call-ins, you can use self -mailers to induce people to phone you but they’re not as effective as other media.
Therefore, self-mailers are usually utilized to generate leads, not sales. Yet self-mailers are still highly effective media when utilized for the purposes detailed above.
